In a pivotal move, the Supreme Council of SSC-Khaatumo has declared the withdrawal of the recently established administration from the semi-autonomous state of Puntland in the northern region of Somalia. This decision, unveiled during a significant assembly held in Las Anod, marks a critical juncture in the region's political landscape.
At the heart of this announcement lies the assertion that there is no eligible candidate from SSC-Khaatumo to contend for the vice presidency of Puntland, as proclaimed by the traditional Council. In tandem, the Council demanded the resignation of the two SSC-Khatumo members currently serving on the committee responsible for resolving disputes and sanctioning the Puntland parliament.
Garad Jama Garad Ali, the preeminent traditional clan leader of Sool, Sanag, and Ain, emphasized the unity prevailing among the people of SSC-Khatumo. He underscored their collective aspiration to forge an administration distinct from both Somaliland and Puntland.
This proclamation follows earlier declarations made by elders and leaders from Sool, Sanag, and Ain, renouncing affiliation with Somaliland. Instead, they reaffirmed their allegiance to the unity and integrity of the Somali Federal Republic, positioning SSC-Khatumo regions within Somalia's federal framework.
However, this pursuit of autonomy has not been without turmoil. Conflict erupted in Las Anod between forces from Somaliland and local SSC-Khatumo factions, resulting in a devastating toll. Lives were lost, thousands were wounded, and over half a million individuals were displaced from their homes.
After a grueling eight months of strife, the SSC-Khatumo forces successfully ousted the Somaliland army from their territories earlier this year. President Muse Bihi Abdi of Somaliland acknowledged the setback faced by his troops following the loss of Gojacade, Somaliland's key base near Las Anod, to SCC forces.
The ramifications of SSC-Khatumo's decision to disengage from Puntland and assert its independence resonate deeply within the complex tapestry of Somali regional politics. The region's steadfast commitment to self-determination and its allegiance to the Federal Republic of Somalia amidst conflict underscore the arduous path toward regional stability and sovereignty.
As SSC-Khatumo charts its course, navigating the intricate dynamics of regional politics, its quest for autonomy continues to shape the evolving narrative of Somalia's political landscape.
