UAE President Affirms Support for Ending Sudan Crisis in Call with Sudanese Army Chief

In a significant diplomatic move, United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to supporting initiatives aimed at ending the ongoing crisis in Sudan. This crucial message was conveyed during a phone call with Sudan's army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as reported by the Emirati state news agency WAM on Thursday, July 18.

UAE's Commitment to Sudan

Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the UAE's keenness to back all solutions and initiatives that contribute to halting the escalation and resolving the crisis in a manner that enhances Sudan's stability and security. He also highlighted the importance of fulfilling the aspirations of the Sudanese people, who have been severely impacted by the conflict.

This phone call marks the first public communication between the two leaders since their relations deteriorated last year. The strain in their relationship became evident when the Sudanese army accused the UAE at the UN Security Council in June of providing weapons and support to its rival warring party, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a claim that the Gulf country has consistently denied.

Allegations and Denials

"The military aggression launched by the Rapid Support militia, supported with weapons by the Emirates, is deliberately and systematically targeting the villages and cities," Sudanese UN Ambassador Al-Harith Idriss Al-Harith Mohamed told the Security Council in June.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF erupted in April last year, triggered by disagreements over the transition to free elections. The war has had devastating consequences, with the UN reporting that nearly 25 million people—half of Sudan's population—now need aid, famine is looming, and 10 million people have been displaced from their homes.

Humanitarian Crisis

The humanitarian impact of the conflict is staggering. The United Nations has highlighted the urgent need for aid, with millions facing the threat of famine and displacement. The situation calls for immediate and effective intervention to prevent further suffering and to restore peace and stability in the region.

UAE's Role in Conflict Resolution

The UAE's renewed diplomatic engagement signals a willingness to play a constructive role in resolving the conflict. By affirming its support for de-escalation and peaceful resolution, the UAE aims to contribute to enhancing Sudan's stability and security, aligning with the broader aspirations of the Sudanese people.

This call not only represents a significant step in mending diplomatic relations but also underscores the UAE's broader commitment to supporting peace and stability in the region. The emphasis on dialogue and peaceful resolution reflects a pragmatic approach to conflict resolution, one that prioritizes the well-being and aspirations of the people affected by the crisis.

The ongoing crisis in Sudan requires concerted efforts and international cooperation to ensure a peaceful and stable future for the country. The UAE's support for initiatives aimed at ending the crisis is a positive development, offering hope for a resolution that aligns with the aspirations of the Sudanese people. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community's role in supporting peace and stability in Sudan remains crucial.

Tensions Escalate as Talks Resume Between Somaliland and Federal Government

In a region marked by historical complexities and territorial disputes, the recent resumption of talks between the federal government and the breakaway territory of Somaliland has sparked new tensions. The discussions, hosted by President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, aimed to navigate the delicate relationship between these entities. However, these talks faced strong opposition from President Said Abdullahi Deni of Puntland, a semi-autonomous region within Somalia's northern part. Denouncing the absence of Puntland in the discussions, Deni condemned the reopening of talks, highlighting the ongoing border disputes between Puntland and Somaliland as a significant point of contention. Since February, clashes between the Somaliland army and SSC-Khatumo forces have escalated, with both sides accusing each other of instigating fatal combat in Las Anod town. This protracted conflict has contributed to heightened tensions in the region and complicated the efforts toward resolution. Som...

Puntland State Divided as SSC-Khatumo Seeks Separation

The High Court of Puntland State in Somalia recently issued a ruling that has reignited political tensions in the region. The Court upheld the decision of the Supreme Council of the SSC-Khatumo, a breakaway group within Puntland, to declare its independence from the state. This controversial move has cast uncertainty over the upcoming elections in Puntland, scheduled for January 8, 2024. Competing Claims to Sovereignty The SSC-Khatumo administration has long advocated for autonomy from Puntland, citing historical grievances and marginalization. The group claims to represent the interests of the Somali clans residing in the eastern portions of Puntland. The Puntland government, however, maintains that the SSC-Khatumo's claims are illegitimate and that the group's attempt to secede is unconstitutional. High Court Ruling Raises Concerns The High Court's decision to uphold the SSC-Khatumo's declaration of independence has created a complex legal and political situatio...
