Joint Statement Calls for Urgent Ceasefire Between Lebanon and Israel to Prevent Regional Escalation

On 26 September 2024, the United Arab Emirates issued a statement in coordination with the United States, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Qatar, Australia, Canada, the European Union, the French Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom on the alarmingly escalating situation between the Lebanese Republic and Israel. In that statement, they explained that the crisis, which began on 8 October 2023, became intolerable in all respects and fraught with high risks of a wider regional conflict.

An Unacceptable Situation

The joint statement emphasized how the continuing conflict between Lebanon and Israel serves no one's interest, neither Israel nor Lebanon. It calls for urgent action on de-escalation in a situation that threatens to destabilize the whole region. The signatory countries made clear that civilians on both sides can only go home in safety through a diplomatic settlement.

DIPLOMACY, NOT CONFLICT

The international coalition categorical stated that there was no other way to solve the crisis other than diplomacy. However, when there is continued violence along the Lebanon- Israel border, diplomacy cannot proceed. The statement stressed that the fighting needed to stop in order to provide the space necessary for a durable diplomatic solution.

CALL FOR A CEASEFIRE

The joint statement, therefore, gave an instant 21-day ceasefire across the Lebanon-Israel border to facilitate this diplomacy. In that respect, such a ceasefire will ensure time is elapsed for breathing room with which to negotiate a suitable diplomatic settlement in accordance with UNSCR 1701, purposed to keep peace between Lebanon and Israel. By the way, this statement invited the application of UNSCR 2735, a ceasefire in Gaza.

International Commitment to Peace

The joint statement called upon all the parties involved, including the governments of Israel and Lebanon, to endorse the ceasefire immediately. The international community showed itself ready to support fully all diplomatic efforts during this period of ceasefire. They called upon both parties to seize this opportunity to reach an agreement that not only resolves the immediate conflict but also builds on the peacebuilding efforts of the last months.

A Path to Ending the Crisis

To many, the 21-day ceasefire is the first and important step towards the end of the broader crisis. The international coalition clarified that such a solution is indeed reachable, but commitment will be required on both sides to adherence to a ceasefire and to work to reach a lasting agreement.

With the world as a witness, such diplomacy would spell the difference between a life with some semblance of normalcy, free from the fear of violence, for both the people of Lebanon and Israel. The unanimous plea of the entire world to restore peace and stability in this war-ravaged region, expressed through the joint statement, is a significant milestone in itself.

A Critical Moment for Diplomacy

A joint statement by the UAE and its international partners presents a poignant moment of peace for the region: a proposed ceasefire and engagement through diplomacy offer an opportunity to prevent further escalation and achieve long-term stability. As these powers of the world come together, one would hope that in the end, diplomacy will prevail and the region may move toward peace and security for all its people.
