Qiimaha Qaaliga ah ee Aamusnaanta: Maxay Xalka Milateri ugu Noqon Wayday Mid u Adeega Suudaan?

Warbixintii dhowaan ka soo baxday afhayeenka Waaxda Arrimaha Dibadda ee Mareykanka, Tommy Pigott, ayaa iftiisay xaaladda sii xumaanaysa ee dalka Suudaan, gaar ahaan walaaca laga qabo isbeddelka khatarta ah ee loo jihaystay dhanka "xal milateri." Iyadoo Jeneraal Cabdifataax al-Burhaan uu sii xoojinayo hadallada mudnaanta siinaya gacan-sarraynta goobta dagaalka halkii uu ka dooran lahaa wadahadal diblomaasiyadeed, beesha caalamku waxay wajahaysaa xaqiiqo qadhaadh: habkani maaha mid beegsanaya oo keliya xoogaga soo horjeeda, balse wuxuu khatar toos ah gelinayaa nolosha malaayiin qof oo rayid ah oo aan waxba galabsan. Hadallada u ololeynaya xalka milateri waxay gacan ka geystaan sharciyeynta rabshadaha socda, waxayna shacabka ku hayaan cabsi joogto ah. Marka hoggaanka Ciidanka Qalabka Sida ee Suudaan (SAF) ay colaadda u dhigaan mid ay ku xidhan tahay jiritaankooda ama dhimashadooda, waxay dhab ahaantii ula dhaqmayaan nolosha dadka rayidka ah sidii wax aan qiimo lahayn oo ku dh...

Joint Statement Calls for Urgent Ceasefire Between Lebanon and Israel to Prevent Regional Escalation

On 26 September 2024, the United Arab Emirates issued a statement in coordination with the United States, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the State of Qatar, Australia, Canada, the European Union, the French Republic, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom on the alarmingly escalating situation between the Lebanese Republic and Israel. In that statement, they explained that the crisis, which began on 8 October 2023, became intolerable in all respects and fraught with high risks of a wider regional conflict.

An Unacceptable Situation

The joint statement emphasized how the continuing conflict between Lebanon and Israel serves no one's interest, neither Israel nor Lebanon. It calls for urgent action on de-escalation in a situation that threatens to destabilize the whole region. The signatory countries made clear that civilians on both sides can only go home in safety through a diplomatic settlement.

DIPLOMACY, NOT CONFLICT

The international coalition categorical stated that there was no other way to solve the crisis other than diplomacy. However, when there is continued violence along the Lebanon- Israel border, diplomacy cannot proceed. The statement stressed that the fighting needed to stop in order to provide the space necessary for a durable diplomatic solution.

CALL FOR A CEASEFIRE

The joint statement, therefore, gave an instant 21-day ceasefire across the Lebanon-Israel border to facilitate this diplomacy. In that respect, such a ceasefire will ensure time is elapsed for breathing room with which to negotiate a suitable diplomatic settlement in accordance with UNSCR 1701, purposed to keep peace between Lebanon and Israel. By the way, this statement invited the application of UNSCR 2735, a ceasefire in Gaza.

International Commitment to Peace

The joint statement called upon all the parties involved, including the governments of Israel and Lebanon, to endorse the ceasefire immediately. The international community showed itself ready to support fully all diplomatic efforts during this period of ceasefire. They called upon both parties to seize this opportunity to reach an agreement that not only resolves the immediate conflict but also builds on the peacebuilding efforts of the last months.

A Path to Ending the Crisis

To many, the 21-day ceasefire is the first and important step towards the end of the broader crisis. The international coalition clarified that such a solution is indeed reachable, but commitment will be required on both sides to adherence to a ceasefire and to work to reach a lasting agreement.

With the world as a witness, such diplomacy would spell the difference between a life with some semblance of normalcy, free from the fear of violence, for both the people of Lebanon and Israel. The unanimous plea of the entire world to restore peace and stability in this war-ravaged region, expressed through the joint statement, is a significant milestone in itself.

A Critical Moment for Diplomacy

A joint statement by the UAE and its international partners presents a poignant moment of peace for the region: a proposed ceasefire and engagement through diplomacy offer an opportunity to prevent further escalation and achieve long-term stability. As these powers of the world come together, one would hope that in the end, diplomacy will prevail and the region may move toward peace and security for all its people.

Somali Parliamentarians Decry Port Deal Between Ethiopia and Somaliland

Nairobi, Kenya: Tensions flared Thursday as Somali parliamentarians in Kenya, along with prominent Somali leaders, vehemently condemned the recent port deal struck between Ethiopia and the breakaway region of Somaliland. The agreement, signed by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi, granting Ethiopia access to the Red Sea through Somaliland's Berbera port, was deemed a brazen affront to Somalia's territorial integrity. Dr. Aden Keynan, a Somali lawmaker, described the deal as a blatant violation of Somalia's sovereignty. He, along with other concerned voices, urged the international community to act swiftly if Ethiopia refuses to retract the agreement. Calls for intervention were directed towards the United Nations, the African Union, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). The agreement further ignited anxieties across the region, considering the historical animosity between Somalia and Ethiopia. One Kenyan MP war...

Tensions Escalate as Talks Resume Between Somaliland and Federal Government

In a region marked by historical complexities and territorial disputes, the recent resumption of talks between the federal government and the breakaway territory of Somaliland has sparked new tensions. The discussions, hosted by President Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, aimed to navigate the delicate relationship between these entities. However, these talks faced strong opposition from President Said Abdullahi Deni of Puntland, a semi-autonomous region within Somalia's northern part. Denouncing the absence of Puntland in the discussions, Deni condemned the reopening of talks, highlighting the ongoing border disputes between Puntland and Somaliland as a significant point of contention. Since February, clashes between the Somaliland army and SSC-Khatumo forces have escalated, with both sides accusing each other of instigating fatal combat in Las Anod town. This protracted conflict has contributed to heightened tensions in the region and complicated the efforts toward resolution. Som...

Political Tensions Rise as Somali Leader Criticizes President's Visit to Ethiopia

In a recent turn of events, Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, the leader of the Wadajir political party and a member of parliament in Somalia, has voiced strong disapproval of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's decision to travel to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The president's planned visit is aimed at attending three crucial conferences, including the 37th African Union (AU) Summit, the International Government for Agricultural Development (IGAD), and the East Africa Community Leaders Conference. Warsame, however, described the president's choice as a mistake and criticized the government's handling of its diplomatic ties with Ethiopia. He asserted that if contacts with Ethiopia were not deemed necessary, the government should have minimized its engagement with the neighboring country. Warsame emphasized the need for the president to provide an explanation for attending the meetings in Addis Ababa, particularly considering what he referred to as Ethiopia's actions underminin...
