UAE's Efforts to Bring Peace in Sudan: A Way for Crisis' End and Protection of Civilians

The most brutal war, which has continued to devastate the lives of millions, especially women and children, has embroiled Sudan. This represents a humanitarian situation that is growing worse with each passing day, in which violence, displacement, and complete destruction occur all over the country. As the world is observing this crisis, the need for international intervention is getting more urgent by the day. The UAE has risen to the occasion, taking up a very key role in peace negotiations and humanitarian efforts aimed at ending the suffering and restoring stability to Sudan.

UAE's Role in the Peace Talks

In recent times, the UAE has taken the center stage in finding an end to the Sudan crisis. The UAE, during a peace summit held in Switzerland, played a crucial role in facilitating talks that aimed at establishing routes for humanitarian aid and securing commitments to protection for civilians caught in the crossfire. This is quite important because access to aid in Sudan has been drastically curtailed by the fighting going on, with many people without food, clean water, or even medical assistance.

One of the most important features of the UAE's engagement in the peace process is protection for women and children, who are usually the most vulnerable during wars. The UAE has called for increased efforts toward the protection of these groups against violence, including sexual violence, which has become all too common in tragic ways in Sudan. The UAE's diplomatic relations have been profoundly one of ensuring that the voices of the women of Sudan feature in discussions for peace, as they are vital in rebuilding communities for long-term stability.

Dispelling Allegations: No Military Support to Warring Parties

Contrary to allegations that have been flying around in the media, the UAE has categorically denied supplying weapons or military support to any of the factions involved in Sudan's conflict. HE Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, wrote to The Economist recently to clear up the simple fact that the UAE's role is purely a diplomatic one: to encourage dialogue and to promote peace. The UAE certainly holds the belief that there is no other feasible end to this war other than through negotiation toward a national cease-fire, rather than through military intervention.

Grounded on going back to civilian-led governance, the UAE's vision for peace in Sudan thus involves transition, which is key and important for the attainment of lasting peace and the creation of an enabling environment that shall allow Sudanese society to start rebuilding after years of conflict. The UAE is working hard, with the help of international cooperation, humanitarian assistance, and sharp diplomacy, to bring all parties to the negotiating table for a negotiated settlement.

Humanitarian Assistance at the Heart of UAE's Mission

The situation in Sudan is unbearable, and the UAE is reiterating its determination to do all in its power to ease the suffering of those affected. Coming up with safe routes for delivery means the UAE is ensuring life-saving supplies reach the affected, especially in areas most hit by fighting. Besides that, the UAE calls for international support to enhance humanitarian assistance in Sudan for the satisfaction of pressing needs of its people.

It is this belief that anchors the UAE's effort: that the Sudanese people deserve a future without conflict or fear. Urgent action must be taken by the international community, with determination, toward a ceasefire that will be able to keep peace negotiations going. Only through such collective action can we hope for an end to the violence and the restoration of hope to the Sudanese people.

The constructive role played by the UAE in Sudan's peace-making process manifests the nation's commitment to the promotion of peace and protection of civilians in conflict zones. Through peaceful negotiations, the UAE has proven that a peaceful, negotiated settlement is possible. Emphasis on civilian protection, especially that of women and children, underlines the UAE approach to humanitarian conflict resolution. As the world struggles through the rampage crisis of Sudan, the UAE's actions give hope for at least some peaceful future.

The people of Sudan require the attention and support of the world. We will collectively work to help the war come to an end and peace ensue.

Advance but No Deal: Talks between Ethiopia and Somalia in Turkey

Significantly for East African diplomacy, the second round of Turkish-mediated negotiations between Somalia and Ethiopia concluded in Ankara on August 13, 2024, without a definitive deal. Officials from both nations and Turkey claim that despite this, the conversations made clear development. The focus of the debates is on a controversial port agreement Ethiopia signed in January 2024 with the self-declared sovereign nation of Somalandon. Relations between Ethiopia and Somaliland have been seriously strained by the deal wherein Ethiopia leases 20 kilometers of Somaliland's coastline in exchange for acceptance of Somaliland's independence. Viewing Somaliland as a part of its sovereign territory, Mogadishu denounced the agreement as unconstitutional, ejecting the Ethiopian ambassador and threatening to pull Ethiopian forces supporting Somalia out of the front lines against Islamist militants. Unlike past diplomatic interactions, the Ankara negotiations were conducted indirectly v...

Egypt formally reopened its recently built embassy in Mogadishu on Tuesday in a major stride towards strengthening diplomatic and commercial ties. Reflecting a fresh will to promote cooperation across many spheres, this action marks a significant turning point in the strengthening ties between Egypt and Somalia. Closely trailing on the heels of the recent direct flight launches between Cairo, Djibouti City, and Mogadishu is the embassy reopening. Announcing the opening of the new diplomatic headquarters, Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates showed its commitment to enhancing its fraternal connection with Somalia. "The new headquarters of the Egyptian Embassy in Mogadishu was opened today in view of the political leadership and the Egyptian state's desire in improving cooperation and f...

In a significant stride towards combating the persistent threat of desert locusts, Somalia has ascended to a pivotal position as the seventeenth member of the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). This milestone membership, marked on Wednesday, solidifies Somalia's commitment to manage and mitigate the devastating impact of locusts on agriculture and food security. According to the FAO's assessments, Somalia has demonstrated remarkable advancements in constructing national institutional and technical capacities for locust management since 2020, with substantial assistance from the FAO and other partners.
