Tragedy in Dar es Salaam: Building Collapse in Kariakoo Claims Lives

  On November 17, 2024, a devastating building collapse in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, claimed the lives of at least 13 people and injured many others. The incident occurred in the Kariakoo market area when a four-story building unexpectedly came down around 9 a.m. local time. Rescue Efforts and Immediate Response Emergency responders and local residents rushed to the scene, working tirelessly to rescue those trapped under the rubble. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan confirmed that over 80 individuals were pulled from the wreckage and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Somalia's Prime Minister Calls for Unity in Countering Extremism

In a significant move to address the ongoing security challenges in Somalia, Prime Minister Hamsa Abdi Barre has taken the initiative to engage clerics and religious leaders in the fight against extremist ideologies. The Prime Minister inaugurated a conference in Mogadishu, emphasizing the critical role of clerics in promoting peace, reconciliation, and countering extremist ideologies within the nation.


During the conference, Prime Minister Barre stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, intellectuals, clerics, and the people to address the various challenges facing Somalia. He highlighted the pivotal role that clerics and Imams play in raising public awareness and countering the extremist narratives propagated by groups like al-Shabaab and ISIS in the region.


"I urge you to engage in reconciliation, stabilization, state-building, and the finalization of the constitution," Prime Minister Barre stated, highlighting the government's achievements in combating extremism and the need for comprehensive efforts in these areas.


In a separate event commemorating the first anniversary of the twin bombing at Somalia's education ministry in Mogadishu, Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre made a fervent call to all Somali Sheikhs to actively participate in the fight against al-Shabaab. He expressed concern that some clerics and Imams in mosques had not spoken out against extremist groups. In response, he urged them to "open the mosque doors to those who can" address these issues effectively.


Somalia has faced ongoing insecurity for years, primarily due to the threats posed by terrorist organizations such as al-Shabaab and ISIS. Prime Minister Barre's calls for unity and action among religious leaders signal a renewed effort by the government to counter these threats and work towards a more peaceful and stable Somalia.
