On International Women's Day, the United Nations has called on Somali authorities to redouble their efforts in ensuring women's inclusion in politics and realizing the minimum 30% quota for women's parliamentary representation.
"This quota is crucial for promoting gender equality and empowering women in Somalia," asserted Catriona Laing, the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Somalia. "Somali women have consistently made substantial contributions to peacebuilding and reconciliation, but more resources must be invested to build on this progress."
Somali women leaders have actively engaged with stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of legislation and mechanisms to implement the women's quota. The UN supports the Federal Government in its efforts to increase women's political participation and enhance the protection of women and girls through laws that align with human rights obligations and standards.
The theme of this year's International Women's Day is 'Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress,' highlighting the need to empower women and accelerate gender equality. Since 1875, this occasion has been observed globally to celebrate women's achievements and demand action towards their empowerment.
