President Mohamud emphasized the scholars' crucial role as inheritors of Somalia's esteemed religious legacy. He urged them to utilize their expertise and influence to combat the radical ideology of al-Shabaab, which he described as rooted in ignorance and violence.
Responding to the president's call, the religious experts declared their solidarity with the government's mission to fight al-Shabaab and restore stability to the country. Condemning the crimes committed by the extremist group, the scholars asserted that such activities are contrary to the teachings of Islam and the values upheld by the Somali people. They issued a powerful call to the Somali population, urging them to unite with the government and security services in the collective effort to counter terrorist organizations.
In January 2023, a gathering of Somali academics convened in Mogadishu with the specific aim of delegitimizing al-Shabaab's influence. The event saw theological arguments being presented to discuss solutions for confronting the radical ideology of the group. Prominent intellectuals and religious leaders from Somalia and other countries actively participated in the discussions.
Over the past two years, the federal government of Somalia has launched a military offensive against al-Shabaab, successfully reclaiming the majority of population centers in the states of Hirshabelle and Galmudug. In response, al-Shabaab retaliated by launching attacks against both civilian and military targets in Mogadishu and recently lost territories.
The government's and religious scholars' cooperative efforts demonstrate a united front against the threat that al-Shabaab poses as well as a determination to overcome the difficulties and bring peace to Somalia.
