Somali President Meets with Turkey's Erdogan, Fostering Cooperation

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud recently met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan in Antalya, Turkey. The meeting took place during the Antalya Diplomacy Forum (ADF), where President Mohamud addressed attendees on the critical role of diplomacy in the age of conflicts.

Enhanced Economic and Defense Cooperation

During their meeting, the two presidents discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation in various areas, including the economy and defense. On February 8th, Turkey's Defense Minister Yasar Guler and Somalia's Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur signed a Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement, which was approved by both presidents.

Focus on maritime cooperation

The 10-year agreement aims to bolster the development of Somalia's blue economy, including fish production and economic infrastructure construction. Additionally, it emphasizes the protection of marine resources, cooperation in counterterrorism efforts, and the prevention of illegal activities along Somalia's coastline.

Antalya Diplomacy Forum: A Global Gathering

The ADF is an annual forum that brings together heads of state, government officials, and experts from academia and think tanks around the world. This year's forum focused on the theme "Rethinking Diplomacy: New Approaches to a Changing World."

President Mohamud emphasized the need for a collective approach to resolving conflicts and sustaining peace. He stressed that diplomacy remains a crucial tool in navigating complex global challenges and building a more stable and equitable world.

Strengthening Turkey's Presence in Somalia

Turkey has been a key partner in Somalia's development and stabilization efforts. The country has provided significant humanitarian aid, implemented infrastructure projects, and trained Somali security forces. This latest agreement further strengthens Turkey's engagement in Somalia and demonstrates its commitment to the country's long-term progress.
