Political Tensions Flare as Projects Stall in Somalia's Puntland Region

In a recent development shedding light on the simmering political tensions in Somalia, Deputy Minister of Finance Abdiqafar Hassan Hange has accused Puntland's leader, Said Deni, of obstructing crucial development projects, thereby depriving the region of significant opportunities for growth and employment.

Addressing the issue in Mogadishu, Minister Hange highlighted that numerous projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars are currently pending approval from Puntland authorities. These projects encompass a wide range of sectors, including education, healthcare, infrastructure, and energy. Among the initiatives awaiting Puntland's endorsement are the national teachers' salary project, the Damal Health project, the Barwaaqo project (formerly Biyole), the budget subsidy project, and the Energy and Electricity project.

Minister Hange did not mince words in his criticism of Deni, accusing him of jeopardizing the livelihoods of Puntland's citizens and displaying authoritarian tendencies by blocking these essential projects. He asserted that Deni's actions are motivated by his political conflicts with the federal government, rather than genuine concerns for the welfare of his constituents.

This recent clash between federal and regional authorities is not an isolated incident. In May 2023, Deputy Finance Minister Abdiqafar Hassan Hange had previously suggested that Deni's opposition to the federal government stemmed from his failed bid to become Prime Minister. Deni's alliance with President Mohamud during the 2022 presidential elections further underscores the complex web of political dynamics at play in Somalia.

Adding to the escalating tensions, Puntland's recent declaration of semi-autonomy has further strained relations between the region and the central government. The decision to operate independently until changes to the Somali constitution are approved via a popular referendum has exacerbated existing divisions within the country.

Puntland, home to approximately 4.9 million people, plays a pivotal role in Somalia's political landscape. The reelection of Said Abdullahi Deni as Puntland's leader for another five years in January signifies the region's continued influence and autonomy.

As Somalia grapples with internal strife and external pressures, the standoff between federal and regional authorities threatens to undermine much-needed development initiatives and exacerbate socioeconomic challenges in Puntland. The fate of these pending projects hangs in the balance, contingent upon the resolution of entrenched political rivalries and the pursuit of collaborative efforts towards national unity and progress.
