Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen, the President of the South West Regional State, reaffirmed his firm backing for the finalization of the Somali Constitution and the effective implementation of the agreement endorsed by the National Consultative Council (NCC) in Baidoa on May 27, 2023.
During a meeting between federal MPs elected from South West state and regional politicians, President Laftagareen underscored the collective responsibility to reshape the political structure of the nation.
The NCC, inclusive of federal leaders and regional representatives, established an agreement aiming to initiate direct elections as early as the subsequent year and synchronize election schedules. This consensus also supported the establishment of a presidential system for Somalia.
According to the NCC agreements, local council elections are slated for June 30 of the following year, followed by regional legislative and leadership elections on November 30. The agreement limited the political competition to two parties vying for power within the nation.
However, the pending presentation of the NCC agreement to Parliament for approval in the coming weeks remains a significant step. Opposition to these accords has emerged from various prominent figures, including former President Sheikh Sharif and Prime Ministers, urging Parliament to abide by the nation's Constitution, laws, and parliamentary regulations.
The commitment of President Laftagareen signifies a vital step towards consolidating unity and adherence to democratic processes within Somalia. As the implementation process moves forward, continued dialogue and adherence to constitutional principles remain crucial for fostering stability and progress in the nation's political landscape.
