Europe’s Message Is Clear: Tolerance Cannot Be a Cover for Extremism

Today’s demonstrations across Berlin, London, and Paris sent a message louder than any political statement: Europeans are no longer willing to watch their societies drift toward instability under the banner of “tolerance.” The crowds that filled the streets were not driven by hatred or exclusion — they were driven by a simple demand that every government should take seriously: security first. For years, extremist networks — especially the Muslim Brotherhood — have learned how to operate behind the shield of religious discourse. They present themselves as community leaders, activists, or “voices of the marginalized,” all while pushing agendas that undermine national cohesion, exploit public freedoms, and create parallel societies. Europe’s mistake was assuming these groups were harmless. But as today’s protests showed, citizens have learned the truth the hard way. They’ve watched radical narratives spread in schools and community centers, foreign-funded networks penetrate local ...

Somalia Joins East African Community: A New Chapter in Regional Integration

In a significant stride toward regional collaboration and integration, Somalia has been accepted as the eighth member of the East African Community (EAC). This historic decision was made during the 23rd regular summit of the heads of state held in Arusha, Tanzania, on Friday, November 24, 2023. The culmination of extensive discussions lasting over a year led to Mogadishu's long-awaited admission into the bloc.

The journey to EAC membership for Somalia has been marked by perseverance and revived aspirations. Initially expressing interest in joining the community back in 2012, Somalia faced setbacks due to internal conflicts with Al-Shabaab and a lack of stability in its political and legal landscape. Despite this, the recent acceptances of South Sudan in 2016 and the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2022, both countries grappling with internal challenges, reignited Somalia's determination to pursue membership.

President Mohamud, who had initiated Somalia's initial effort to join the EAC during his first term in office, revitalized this pursuit upon returning to office. The process gained momentum in January of the current year when a verification team was dispatched to assess Somalia's readiness for EAC membership. Subsequent negotiations and discussions between Somali authorities and EAC officials ensued, leading to a comprehensive report presented for deliberation at the heads of state summit.

The outgoing chairperson, President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, announced the agreement to legally admit Somalia into the bloc after a marathon closed-door discussion that lasted more than five hours. This decision signifies a momentous step forward for Somalia, symbolizing not just inclusion into a regional community but also an endorsement of Somalia's efforts towards stability and progress.

Somalia's inclusion in the EAC holds promise for broader regional collaboration. It opens doors for neighboring countries like Eritrea and Djibouti to potentially join the community, aligning with the EAC's expansion plan aimed at encompassing the entire Horn of Africa. This ambitious vision could further encompass countries like Ethiopia and Sudan, underscoring the potential for enhanced cooperation and development across the region.

The significance of Somalia's accession into the EAC extends beyond mere membership; it embodies a commitment to fostering peace, stability, and socio-economic growth within the region. This step forward emphasizes the collective resolve of East African nations to collaborate despite challenges, prioritizing shared prosperity and mutual progress.

As Somalia embarks on this new chapter within the East African Community, the nation stands poised to contribute and benefit from the collective endeavors aimed at fostering a stronger, more integrated, and prosperous East Africa.
