In a groundbreaking move aligning with the ambitious National Hydrogen Strategy and Net Zero Strategy 2050 of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) has joined forces with HYCAP Group, a leading net-zero asset management company. The strategic agreement focuses on advancing the production, storage, and transportation of green hydrogen, marking a pivotal step in establishing Abu Dhabi as a key player in the global transition towards sustainable energy.
Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) inked between HYCAP Middle East and ADDED, the two entities will collaborate to explore the feasibility of constructing an industrial complex in Abu Dhabi. The complex, expected to involve local partners, aims to attract and nurture a diverse array of industrial enterprises while fortifying the value chains associated with hydrogen-related sectors and renewable energy sources.
In November 2023, HYCAP Group demonstrated its commitment to the region's development by inaugurating its regional headquarters in Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM). Additionally, the company unveiled plans for a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Fund based in the UAE, dedicated to investing in businesses contributing to the net-zero energy transition and the clean hydrogen supply chain.
The UAE's National Hydrogen Strategy sets an ambitious target of producing 1.4 million tons of green hydrogen annually by 2031, propelling the nation into the top 10 global producers. The strategy includes the establishment of hydrogen hubs to accelerate industry adoption, cultivate a robust supply chain, and facilitate infrastructure development.
Collaborating under the MoU, the Industrial Development Bureau (IDB), the arm of ADDED responsible for industrial sector development, and HYCAP aim to establish an industrial complex in Abu Dhabi. This complex will encompass renewable energy sources, an electrolysis plant, a hydrogen storage facility, and hydrogen transport infrastructure.
The anticipated industrial complex is poised to contribute significantly to Abu Dhabi's sustainable industrial sector and align with the goals of the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy (ADIS), which focuses on building value chains for specific industries. Furthermore, the project aims to solidify Abu Dhabi's standing as the most influential and competitive industrial hub in the region.
HYCAP's commitment extends beyond the establishment of the industrial complex, as the company strives to create a comprehensive ecosystem of enterprises in Abu Dhabi centered around the hydrogen sector and clean energy infrastructure. This includes the development of facilities for clean hydrogen production, storage, and transportation, as well as manufacturing plants for electrolyzers, electric charging infrastructure, fuel cells, buses, and vehicles.
Eng. Arafat Al Yafei, Executive Director of the IDB, expressed excitement about the agreement, stating, "We are delighted to have signed this agreement with HYCAP, which is an important step along the road to making AD the most competitive industrial hub in the region." Al Yafei emphasized the importance of partnerships with global powerhouses to achieve the objectives outlined in the Abu Dhabi Industrial Strategy.
Jo Bamford, Chairman and Founding Partner of HYCAP Group, highlighted the strategic positioning of the UAE in the emerging center for green hydrogen. Bamford stated, "The UAE is at the forefront of adopting clean and renewable energy sources, and this agreement with the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development is a clear illustration of the commitment that the UAE has made in this regard."
As Abu Dhabi and HYCAP Group embark on this collaborative journey, the alliance is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of green hydrogen production, contributing to the UAE's vision of a sustainable and competitive industrial landscape.
