Somali President Calls for Global Support Against Terrorism: Navigating Security Challenges and Foreign Agreements

In a recent security conference held in the United Arab Emirates, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud delivered a compelling call for increased international assistance in the battle against terrorism while safeguarding national sovereignty. The primary focus of the meeting was on addressing the threat posed by the notorious terrorist organization al-Shabab, with representatives from Qatar, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Turkey in attendance.

President Mohamud underscored the necessity for self-sufficiency in security, highlighting the recent achievements of the Somali armed forces in reclaiming key territories from al-Shabab. However, amidst these victories, Mohamud expressed concern over foreign interference in Somalia's internal affairs, specifically targeting a controversial memorandum of understanding between Ethiopia and Somaliland. This agreement grants Ethiopia access to the strategically vital Red Sea port of Berbera, prompting Mohamud to urge the cancellation of the deal to preserve Somalia's territorial integrity.

The contentious debate surrounding the Ethiopia-Somaliland memorandum has not only drawn criticism from Egypt and the United States but also poses a significant threat to regional stability, potentially emboldening al-Shabab. President Mohamud's plea for international support comes on the heels of a diplomatic breakthrough in December 2023 when the United Nations lifted a long-standing arms embargo on Somalia, allowing the country to bolster its armed forces.

Acknowledging the UAE and other global partners, President Mohamud expressed gratitude for their pivotal role in Somalia's fight against terrorism and their contributions to the nation's development and humanitarian endeavors. The call for unity against common security threats resonates as Somalia strives to navigate the complexities of internal challenges and external agreements, ultimately working towards a more secure and stable future.
